What it means to Renee Montgomery to own a WNBA franchise

can you tell us what it means to you to be an owner of an NBA team? It means a lot, you know, and it's not even just for me it means a lot for my family, you know, I'm from west Virginia, so we're from a small town and to come into being a city like Atlanta and Atlanta embraces me. Atlanta is embracing the team. Uh, it means just, you know, representation. I have nieces, I have nephews, I have, there's so many little girls that can look up and see that they want to be an owner now too. And so for me, those are the things that were important to me. Those are some of the reasons that I wanted to become a part owner. Those are just things that drive me. So to be in this position to be able to help others that that was really the coolest part of it all for me totally, what's different about running a team as a former player? What do you know that some of your peers and ownership don't know, I would say, you know, I understand the game and and not just understand the game. Like as I'm watching the game. Yeah, I'm watching it as part owner and and VP, but I'm also watching it like, man, we just blew a 15 point lead and now they caught up and I'm looking at the bench and I'm watching the chemistry. So there's so many things that helped me understand our team, you know, and and also in the, in the front office, when we're building out media day, I know what the players like. I know what athletes like when we're trying to give the players perks or we're trying to make sure that the players feel like professionals. Well, I know the things that didn't make me feel professional as a player and I'm making sure that we don't do those things and that we give the players the luxuries that they deserve. So I think being a former athlete and have played in the WN. years, it really helped me understand the pulse of the team and the players.

So you mean you really built the maid well brand into just a shining star within the company and within retail in general. I mean tell us a little bit about some of the lessons that you learned doing that that you really would like. That you're really trying to kind of take the overall company now that you're running the whole thing. Yeah I mean listen I think a lot of what we learned over the past so many years of building a great brand and I think it's just really important to all of our brands when we think about our group of brands is really about you know creativity and great product. Um our customers um across all of the brands look for great product and design and uh if we don't have sort of an amazing amazing amazing sort of creative engine and soul within each brand we're sort of nowhere without great products and our brands so that that will always be really important, super important it made well will be and continues to be and has been very, very important at J Crew and then I think listen I think the way everyone shots today, you have to be really digital first, you have to be really sort of convenience oriented customer centric, you know, you put him at the center of every decision you make in terms of you know how you want the source to feel, how you want the app to feel how you want the website to feel and and um and that behavior is really crucial to sort of designing the whole experience and then you know, I think really relevant, successful modern brands have to have real purpose at their core and they really have to listen to their community and understand what's important and and you know people shop with brands today because yeah, they have great products but at the end of the day, you want to feel great about who you're doing business with and as a brand and as a company is a group of brands. We want to feel great about what we're doing every day. So purposes has just been is really crucial to, I think, very successful brands today.

I know a lot of us have been following the news with Britney Spears, I don't know if you have the testimony that she gave around her conservatorship, and you know, when I watched the Britney Spears documentary, one of the first things I thought about was your f. A not because, you know, you and Brittany are in the same position. Um but you know, these ideas of, you know, women who have to deal with having their photo taken paparazzi, and then they sort of media narratives that sprang up around Yeah, yeah, famous young women and you know, I'm just curious, you know, whether or not you you also see some threads of connection there and whether you think that, you know, as a society, are we getting any better at this? Like, are we understanding how to engage with famous women in in a less toxic way, do you think? Mhm. Oh, well, it's very funny that you say that I actually, one of my book of essays in the book deals directly with Britney Spears, so I'm really glad that people will read that. Um But absolutely her her story has always been interesting to me, the free Britney movement, sort of even before the documentary was really interesting to me because um you know, she was the ultimate sort of sacrifice, like commodity commodified woman and really girl um and you know, I think her story is an example of how we are all responsible, including I'll include myself in that anyone who ingests media, the way that we do um for sort of taking out the um her her ability to be able to control the narrative. So I think that in some ways we have gotten better, I don't think that you know, it would now be okay to photograph, you know, under a woman's dress or something like that, and the way that we used to that being said, I actually think it's gotten worse when it comes to women overall. I think that we have taken away the control that women used to have. I mean revenge porn is a perfect example of that. Um any female politician is terrified that, you know, nudes that she sent to a former boyfriend will be used against her. Um and I think that that is really terrifying. I do think that women have less control in that capacity. Um The internet is an amazing place in many ways and in some ways it's granted me a lot of control and authority. I think that as much as people look down on instagram and social media, it's amazing that you're able to curate your own image. It gives. Um for example, models in the nineties never had that opportunity. Everything that they every photograph every interview they did was controlled by the media posts themselves. Um but that being said, it's a double edged sword

I mean when you talk about creativity and the need to learn these digital visual skills early on, I can see there being some a little bit of fear or a little bit of self doubt when it comes to and my creator and my a designer. How do you? Um I mean what would you say to someone who says, I don't know if I have the skill to put this all together, I'm not an artist. You know what what were your response to that? Yeah, it's actually that's a really great question. When we were launching cava before we launch, can anyone, we watched a lot of user testing videos where we could watch people use our products and see how they go years ago. And the first thing was that people were really scared to click buttons, they were scared to play around because it's quite intimidating. And so what was really critical was that we wanted to introduce the concept of to make it feel more playful and fun. Um and we spent a lot of time refining the product so you can jump in, even if you had absolutely no design experience, you can jump in and get started straight away. And so to someone who feels intimidated, um just jump in and start playing is um I think that the tools have been quite intimidating to date, which makes people feel like it's something that they can't do. Um That's a great quote that everyone is an artist. Um hang on, I've forgotten the quote, I won't paraphrase, I think it's I think it's something that you just need to jump in and get started um and you're probably surprised yourself. Um if you just pick something like what is your favorite quote you have, you can google the one that I didn't just recount properly and put it into a design and you'll probably be pretty surprised, I guess the whole point of Canada has been that it's really easy and simple to use. Um and if we've got 500,000 times, let's get you started. So if you've got any idea, literally just search for templates and then you can drag it on, we've got a library of 100 million images. You just search for whatever image you might like, whether it's a photo or an illustration and you can drag that into design, put two and two together and you probably feel pretty proud quite quickly.

So, Shannon, I'd love to start with you here. Tell us a little bit about how gun violence, that landscape shifted and changed during the pandemic. What was different? What did we see that was new here? Well, you know, we knew that America had a gun violence crisis going into Covid and then what we saw were people being isolated with easy access to guns. Whether it was a gun suicide, domestic gun violence, gun homicide, where so many city gun violence interruption depends on having relationships in the community and being able to get out into your community. And even unintentional shootings, you know, with Children unexpectedly at home from school, We saw unintentional shootings rise about 30% during COVID. And so really covid just exacerbated and worsened a public health crisis that has existed in America for years. Um, and it has its roots in things like uh, income inequity and, and housing and inequality, um, and and strained life saving social services. Uh, and also we do know that Covid just like it mostly impacted black and brown americans. So too, does gun violence again, because of these long standing inequities. Um and so that was all really the logical outcome of of not just covid Exacerbating problems in society, but also the increase in gun sales. At the same time, we know about 40 million background checks were conducted in 2020 and that is more than any year on record. Um Gun sales were through the roof. And that was because they were being encouraged by the gun lobby and by the president and his administration at the time. And so these two things really combined to create the perfect storm of unfortunately tragedy. And I think we will be dealing with the repercussions of gun violence exacerbated by covid much longer than we will covid itself.

you have a lot to say and a lot of thoughts on decluttering email is one of these distractions. What else have you done that you think has really helped you declutter? Yeah. You know one of the things for me hall that I found during the pandemic. You know I was out for a couple of years not being ceo and whenever I would put my head and I noticed a lot of like lack of communication and really that energetic clutter. So whenever I came back and saw her physical offices of the office space um no one had been in it for a year and a half. You know because everybody just left and look at the apocalypse like literally disarray everywhere and I was like this is a physical representation of what I've been seeing inside our company. So literally for the past month I've had organizers and decorators working on our physical space. As I've also been de cluttering. I've I've literally had every single employees I got their resume, I got job description and I asked them to even go down to task and I've been at home cutting and pasting going, why is this person doing this? This person should be doing that? I'm doing this major reorganization, not because I want to shake things up because I want more clarity and more communication and whenever you start clearing up that clutter what happens is there's naturally more space that's available, right? So, um like I was telling you about email earlier, what happens is you are subconsciously programming all of those emails that you haven't attended to or the text that you haven't read, write, you don't understand that really in the background, Those incompletions are still processing, so I'm really focused on completions. You know, like, okay, if I haven't looked at that email in a year, chances are I don't need it. It's like going to your closet, right? But we don't think about that at work because I might need that at some point. What's been really fun about coming back to the office is, you know, for example, my product development team and they're like, oh my God, I really thought I couldn't live without these samples and I haven't seen him in a year and a half. I can live without them. So we've been de cluttering from a from every level and it's really interesting. We feel we feel renewed.

you mentioned this about having a team around you that's optimistic and positive. And and one of the things that struck me when I was reading about you and talking to you is that you don't seem to be afraid of failure. You said in the past, I don't ever think things aren't going to work out. Um, is that level of confidence and optimism? Is that intrinsic to who you are? Or is that a tree that you learned along the way at some point in your life and career? Well, I don't think it's just because I'm sure, you know, courageous, I think I'm very naive, I am really naive. So I don't think things aren't going to work out. And by the way, if they don't, I'll do something else. You know, that that's just my my attitude or I'll do it differently. So I definitely think that I am, you know optimistic and and, you know, the glass half full by far right. And you talked about having relationships with other founders, uh, and even founders in the beauty space. And, you know, they are, to some extent your competitors is that, did you have those kind of relationships when you first started? And, um, you know, what, what makes those relationships possible Now, even even when, you know, there's a lot of competition between brands, I absolutely did not have that at the first brand. I wasn't allowed to ever shout out another brand that wasn't part of the corporation. And that was just their thing. So I certainly, you know, know, the difference. And you know what, a lot of people make lipsticks, A lot of people make flushes. I support my friends. I want them to be successful. There's enough success. You know, there's enough room for all of us to be successful. What I do is different. What other people do, I don't copy. And I think it's, you know, we're a lot better when we work together

The advice Dylan Farrow would give to her younger self

we actually have a question from the audience now, who would like to know, what advice would you give to your younger self? Who's, wow. I mean, I feel like there are, I feel like I have a bunch of younger selves and I guess it would depend on whether you're talking about, you know, seven year old Dylan or 14 year old Dylan or 19 year old Dylan or 24 year old Dylan, I think, you know, looking back on my life, I was very focused on what people think of me and that sort of drove me to um not be as authentic in myself, in my skin and in my life as I would have liked to have been. Um and this is just speaking from like a personal level. Um, I don't know, the question is a little vague. I'm not sure if they mean in the context of like how I examine my abuse, how I examine, you know, you can pick my life in general, I think, yeah, I think, you know, just in general, it's okay. I would encourage my younger self uh, to be brazenly authentic

let's dig into the social justice, peace. And there's one part of the film I want to ask you about, but I actually had to practice asking you because I kept, I kept getting emotional and welling up when I did. I mean that's the level of candor and tenderness. That is part of this film. Again, I can't recommend it enough, but I began referring it to my mind as 145 and I know that you know why? Because there was a very important character on the court in our hearts all the time, Brianna Taylor. And I was wondering if you could tell us a little bit about the back story about her, her story, her community, say her name, and some of the very specific issues around black women and families came to be such a focal point for the, for the League this year. You know, I'll start with my personal journey. So over the summer of 2020, we all were understanding what was happening each day and it was sitting on our heart and this was a reckoning of some sort of sort of the sins of our country's past and what it implies and how we treat each other today. And I have seen the video of George Floyd, I saw the video of Ahmad are very and this was all happening, but I think especially as a black woman, you know, understanding the story of Brianna taylor, that was the instance that just hit different for me just because it was someone that you could look in the mirror and and you could relate to and see a young woman that was out there trying to better her life and exuded joy. You know an E. M. P. That was trying to help others. And I think deep down especially as women That touches us in a different way and I think as a league full of women and I love how you said 145 because I've never heard it presented that way that is in true essence what got us to play. It was realizing that as we were hearing these names unfortunately of a number of men, we didn't want the woman to get lost in that conversation because far too often that's what happens to women. You know, there are ways that we deal with biases in society. There's racial biases and there's also gender biases and you know, she's at the intersection of both of those things and we understand as women operating in this world, like we have those challenges to overcome. And I think that's why the W. N. B. A. Players made her are specific platform because we knew, you know, you were twice as twice as hard to get half as far, we had to be twice as loud to say her name so that she is, you know, got justice to the same way that we say other names and that's why we double down and all of us went through that experience over the summer, all of us got to know her and then as a collective where a group that knows how to mobilize and I always say when it comes to the W N. B. A, we're not new to this, we treated it okay because we were standing in solidarity wearing t shirts back in 2016 after Philando Castile happened in Minnesota and this was when the Minnesota lynx were in the finals and they wore T shirts that said change starts with us and incurred fine for doing so and so fast forward. Four years now we're at a different point in society with the heightened awareness and we're continuing the same methods of organization and mobilization that translated to a summer like no other of the W N. B. A. Using platforms to create change. I'll just lastly say that like no one knew that this season will turn into a tremendous change. We do it because I know it's the right thing to do wearing vote war not translated to raising a national profile. That could have arguably tipped the balance of power in our country. No one knew that what was gonna happen when we pulled up in more t shirts, but it just is a testament to the players. The 1 44 in support of also an additional one total 1 45 standing together and doing this whether or not they get the credit. And it was beautiful that as you see in our documentary, you know, the world put light on something that was hidden in plain sight. And that's a remarkable women of the W. N. B. A. But there were there would be no season without the platform of saying her name and Brianna taylor because it's all inherently tied, you know, because we are the exception and not the norm of success in our communities based on our representation. And that's why these women are driven for that.

So you don't necessarily think that over time that recently more power has kind of gone from the public sector into the private. Oh, I do think that that's the case, but I think that that is not an equilibrium any of us should aspire to. I think that is in, you know, from the vantage point of being a board member. It's in some instances quite disappointing that, uh, we as board members or corporations are expected to lead on public policy issues like education, health care or even climate change. I mean, we we do rely very heavily on government helping us to think through how to measure and to think about risk mitigation, but also government has a broader mandate, um, to think about issues such as trade offs. I gave you an example something like racial discrimination. We can all agree and look at the numbers and see that actually having more diverse businesses, whether it's in terms of gender, race, um, in thought and in background, all of that is good stuff. Um, but you know, we also don't want to end up in a situation with the narrative becomes so aggressive that we're fighting discrimination with discrimination. Um, that's also not in equilibrium, which pursue and similarity with climate change. You know, there's no doubt about it. There's an urgent and important issue to address here, but we're not going to get it right until we understand that there are 1.5 billion people in the world, but no access to energy in a in a clean, cost effective way. And the risks of those people living in disorderly environment actually can come to haunt us through disorderly migration and other broader economic challenges. But again, one company can solve that by itself. It needs government involvement. It needs to partner, as we've seen, you know, with the vaccines. You know, there's no way those companies could have done that without really good engagement with government. And that's critically important

I was looking at your instagram the other day, and you posted this photo of yourself wearing this, like, very colourful vest that you were in the first season, and nanny, and it was um making me think about all the gifts I've seen of you from the show online, and you're obviously it's like a very big presence on the internet, and, you know, it made me wonder, like, are you personally interested in social media and like internet culture, is that, you know, there certainly using your image, and I'm just interested like, in how you you think about engaging online, I totally leverage it. I mean, this wasn't available when we were doing the nanny in the nineties, nor was social media even, you know, a thing, but now it most certainly is, and uh, you know, I feel like, um it's important that I always stay very current because I, you know, when I have things to promote and I keep working and I'm pretty active in my career, then I'm able to also slip in my messaging about the platforms that I'm most passionate about, namely, you know, health, um civil liberties, arts and education, ecology, things like that. So it behooves me to keep, you know, a big wide audience all around the world and keep satisfying that appetite. So just the other day, I'm actually learning how to play margin and uh, we're playing to to his team because we're all busy people and it's likely that one of us will have to drop out from one margin monday to another. So my teammate is Rosie O donnell and uh, we won, we won this past monday and we just slipped out and somebody was videotaping us During the game. So I posted it and uh, do my executive director of cancer Francis said that it's over 100,000 already and I just posted it yesterday. So, you know, that's meaningful and it's, you know, it helps my brand, it helps. I'm a, you know, a corporate, uh, you know gal, and I support the uh businesses that hire me. So, you know, it's a, it's kind of a new pr because I've always been a big believer in the marriage between the press and the talent, It's powerful when it's working in the right way and uh, working through social media as a talent and also being able to slip in some positive messaging while you're at it for me is just really key. And so I'm very, very hands on with my social media. I'm usually doing it myself.

C. J. I also want to talk about another another big aspect of your personal experience, as well as your professional experiences that you've been responding to all of these big business challenges, while also being somewhat public about some extraordinary health problems, although health problems that are actually not that extraordinary for so many women. Um and that are not often discussed in the professional sphere. You've at facebook, you've spoken about working despite a miscarriage, dealing with endometriosis, um high risk pregnancy that made you do your job while you were on bed rest for several months. And recently you've been vocal about another somewhat under recognized disorder that affects women that you're suffering from called pots. Um So, first of all, just can you tell us a little bit about how you're doing these days? Well, thanks for asking when when you do put that least together, it does sound very daunting. Uh thank God not all of these things happen all at once. Um But you know, I'm doing well, I think the thing that is really interesting is that health is really taboo in the workplace, and I think it's even more taboo for women because we have all, we already have to do so much to prove that we deserve to be in his positions of power. And so anything that creates any doubt around audiology to perform is a risk for women. And I realized, you know, that that um while that was a risk, I admit a position where I also have the responsibility to talk about this because I have a lot of women in my organization that works suffering from chronic conditions, and we never really pictured themselves as becoming a top senior leader because they didn't have role models that had made it uh to to these levels. And, and so when I started opening up sometimes, you know, I'll be honest, sometimes I was forced to open up because I was on bed rest for five months and I had to need, you know, the full launch of facebook live from my bed five years ago at a time where, you know, dialing in from your bed wasn't cool. Uh, so I realized that when I did open up, it actually encouraged a lot of my key members to be more vulnerable to open up and for me to help them and help their career in a much better way. Uh, so that felt like a big responsibility for me to to speak up. And then that became honestly a little bit of a personal cause and and passion for me because I look at the trends of autoimmune diseases and it's 50 million people into us, 75% of the patients are women. It's on the rise massively. And I do believe that uh you know, if we don't address this, it's going to uh end up impacting women in their career and that's um, let alone their life. Uh and so that's something that I really take to heart. And I found out with some wonderful clinicians and researchers, and at the end of the year, we're going to open up the first research institutes around Euro indian condition that particularly affects women, because I do think that we need to tackle that head on.

we spend a lot of time with the Vice president travel prep and more. What's your relationship like with her and what's something that you've learned from her? She is absolutely lovely and I just feel so grateful to have this opportunity to serve. I worked for president biden on his campaign for nearly um almost two years. And in the course of that I got the opportunity to really get to know um Vice President Harris since Senator Harris as she joined the ticket. And it has been truly just really the opportunity of a lifetime to work for both of them to learn from both of them. And she's always really great about giving advice. And I just feel so fortunate to learn from her every single day and a piece of advice that I heard her gift um to a group of young women and I believe in an interview a couple weeks ago, I will repeat it here for the group. She said um young women, young people across the board, she said the young women especially are often made to feel like they have to be focused on the next thing we're jumping. As young people are often jumping and jumping and going to the next thing she said, my advice to young people would be focused on this thing in front of you right now, do that thing extremely well and the next opportunity will come to you. Yeah, well, that's an excellent piece of advice. Yes. You know, speaking of, you mentioned your period of time working for then candidate biden as well. As we know, you worked for Senator Sanders as well. What's different for you about the experience of now working for a boss who is breaking barriers in her own right as a woman and as a black woman, look, I think what is every single day uh in my job we are making history. This is uh just truly the opportunity of a lifetime to serve the people the american people because that's what this is about. You know, the President. Vice President would both tell you um that this isn't about them, that they do not wake up every day thinking about themselves, but thinking about how they can serve do best for the american people. And I think what's most different for me in this um in my current capacity is well one were government governing. So I worked a lot of campaigns and campaigning is about getting people to agree or or or all on the same page about this idea you have about how you could govern and when you are actually in the government, it is literally about implementing it no longer these lofty ideas, it's about the actual work and I have just really appreciated Vice President Harris, a specific focus on the work. We have a lot of fun, but to keep the focus, she never hesitates to remind us who we are really um affecting what this work really means for people across the country. Uh and she doesn't allow us to get trapped in our bubble of professional politicos. I like to call it people who do this thing called politics, uh governing every single day.

Indra Nooyi says real talent development takes 10-15 years

I've heard you say before, during the last six years or so at Pepsi you produce something like nine Ceos, you know, a number of feet Cfos head of each ours. What was what was your secret to tell us development there? How did you do that? Yeah. Um that's true those numbers when we went back and reflected on it, they said my goodness, I wish we could have retained all of them in Mexico because we already have a lot of depth in the company. But if these people had stayed, the company will be flying even more. Um I think talent development is not an easy job at all. It requires deep commitment. It requires uh you know, watching every step, you know, over many, many years. I think we started Right when I became ceo in 2006 to start developing a pipeline of people that we thought could all be Ceos of Mexico. And my goal was US board should have four or five people to pick from. Not just one person that they had to, you know, de facto appointed ceo. So real talent development and mentorship that takes about 10 or 15 years to build a pipeline to get the people and put them in the right assignments, move them around, test them in various places, mentor them and that's what we did very, very deliberately including figuring out can they be moved overseas or should we give them international experience through assignment? Ology. So we did a very, very careful development plan for each person and then we track them through these entire period and expose them to the board. So when time came for succession, the board actually had way too many candidates to pick from, which was a real luxury. But the downside is those that don't get picked, get picked off and so that's what happened. Um and I think I, you know, recommitted to whole talent development, but I'll be honest with you, Pepsico is always a talent academy. We always recruited the best and that Pepsi sauce makes people want to perform incredibly well at Mexico.
