Now for every drug, we will save hundreds of people and kill three. So we have to choose the right, hundreds of people and not to include the three, right? So this is the challenge. Hello, my name is Alexa Mchale and I'm a senior health and wellness reporter at Fortune Magazine and I'm here in Gustad Switzerland for three days for the Longevity Investors Conference. It's been really fascinating to talk to different people at the forefront of the business of living longer as well as researchers who are at the edge of new biotechnology to potentially extend life. Here's what they say about how to live a longer life. So sleep is the most important thing and it's very hard especially to comments like this when you're socializing 14 hours a day and networking and getting to know people because every single conversation here is fascinating, but you need to prioritize sleep and most of us are absolutely terrible at that. So a lot of my bio a and that I introduce my patients, the things I do myself is we optimize it in my sleep. If you go back 10 years ago when I was a plastic surgery consultant. I was running a number of plastic surgery clinics. You actually would look at my sleep and think, oh, my goodness. This guy is going to die in his fifties and now I can sleep really easy and really comfort for eight hours. And this is, uh, this is through a combination of winding down the evening, have evening routines. The things you saw, teach to your Children as they're growing up are things that we can really do with as adults. So avoiding that sort of blue light in the evening, trying to re have that sort of routine, rewind down and potentially using supplements as well to help optimize that. Experts recommend sleeping eight hours per night for optimal health and longevity and spending at least one hour without screen time before bed. If you can, I really think that we should not treat our body as a snapshot, but a story and the story can only be written if you have more words. So which means that you should test the body continuously. And now we have, for example, digital devices. So we have smart watches, we have smart rings and these devices help to monitor the physiology. So we can already measure and monitor the temperature, the heart rate variability, we can measure the glucose levels with a continuous glucose monitoring device. So we can we have the capability already. So there are four drugs that are FDA approved, which means they, they went through clinical trials, not only that they had through multiple clinical trials and all of them have showed that they target the process of aging that if you give them to animals, they live longer, but more important that if you give them to humans and those are drugs that were not approved for aging, they were approved for something else. Um, and, and you give them for something for something else and they prevent bunch of diseases and also prevent overall mortality. The the most known one is the Ozempic kind of drug, right? The G LP one that was developed for diabetes and I'm a diabetologist. So I've been using it for more than seven years, right. So I know a lot about this drug or this kind of drug. Ozempic is relatively new, but we were using these drugs before. So it was developed for diabetes and it was shown to actually decrease obesity and it was shown in obese people to prevent heart disease, to prevent kidney disease, to prevent Parkinson's to prevent Alzheimer's to prevent liver disease because it actually targets the mechanisms of aging. So in my mind, you should any any elderly patient that you have that is obese or even overweight, you should consider giving him this drug. There is a new field developing, which is A I based drug discovery. So these are compounds, these are molecules like pieces that will be then created into medication and they can be very precisely designed and then synthesized with help of A I into something that will be working on one of a specific process of aging fibrosis, like the our organ structure is changing or ovarian aging or, or some other uh hormonal receptors. One big question I had at this longevity conference was, how will this all be paid for and who will have access to these life extending innovations? I believe I'm most excited about the fact that it will permit the public sector. Um So coming from really a public sector medicine, I really want this to be accessible and affordable for all. And I think as the diagnostic is getting more abundant, the cheaper it is right, just like cogen sequence, it costs bef before it costed like thousands of dollars. Now it can be done for, you know, even $500 or less. So that will make a big difference. Um in order for us to be able to apply it to a broader um broader, you know, amount of patients. And through that, we will generate more data and with this broader amount of data, we can be even more precise and scale even further. Um That is something I'm very excited about. And second again, going back to the A I, I'm really excited about A I based drug discovery because I believe that this is the only way for us to really scale and be more targeted and rather than using something that is already existing repurposing and adjusting, we can just create something that will target specifically. One of our problems in aging, I think, you know, for for immediately some some of the things are very basic so they are really affordable because the your hearing and vision and smell and taste that doesn't require too much of cost. And a lot of that can be covered by the health care system. The other things are of course, um not as easily available but, but still still, you know, for a good middle class, probably accessible right now in some of the countries. So to get a brain MRI and then to fuel it into um some of the companies who do the brain algorithms that's quite inexpensive at the moment. So that's already available. Um And even just talking to a family doctor and asking, hi, you know, c could I get an assessment with a neuropsychologist? Um in in many cases, probably the answer would be yes if the people will request. And I guess that's also one of the things when there will be more requests coming from patients, the health care system will respond better and faster than if only us doctors will push for that. This event highlighted a lot of promising innovations around aging and longevity. But the experts I talked to noted that the main pillars of healthy aging are lifestyle changes, especially for healthy young people, not every drug that's good for old people is good for young people. But the things that are good for young and old are exercise, diet, sleep and social connectivity. So you can always maximize that.

As she previously told, Fortune, she recommends undergoing a series of tests before considering supplements. This is especially important for vegans and vege for whom B 12 deficiency can be more common. But what exactly does vitamin B 12 do according to the National Institutes of Health? Vitamin B 12 is a nutrient that helps keep your body's blood and nerve cells healthy and helps make DNA the genetic material in your cells. It also helps prevent megaloblast anemia. A blood condition that may be the culprit behind someone feeling tired and weak. In addition to weakness and fatigue A B 12 deficiency may also prompt a flu of other symptoms depending on severity including pale skin, heart palpitations, loss of appetite, weight loss, infertility, tingly, hands and feet due to nerve problems, balance issues, depression, confusion, dementia poor memory and mouth soreness. Everyone requires a certain amount of B 12 depending on their age. This starts with half a microgram per day for infants and up to 2.4 mcg for teens and adults. And even more for women who are preg or breastfeeding B 12 is found in a wide array of animal based foods as it's produced by a gut bacteria that has been accumulated in the muscle tissue of most herbivorous animals including fish, cows, chickens and some shellfish. Many livestock are supplemented with B 12 through their feed when absorbed by the animal. It's then passed on to people who eat animal based products such as dairy and meat. Vitamin B 12 is also found in plant based sources including some mushrooms, seaweed and nutrition. Yeast. Still it's not enough to fortify vegans who in particular should consider being tested for deficiency and supplementing their intake. Kathy Danahy, a doctor of pharmacy, a dietary supplement researcher and professor at the University of California. Explains that certain groups are also more prone to vitamin B 12 deficiency. As she told fortune, this includes folks with pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disorder that prevents B 12 absorption. And those who frequently use over the counter stomach acid reduce like famotidine, which reduced the stomach acid needed to release B 12 from animal protein. While B 12 supplements may be a great option for those looking to increase their intake. Consumers should be selective when making their purchase, Jolene Brighton, a naturopathic endocrinologist told fortune be wary of supplements that are far cheaper than the rest or look like a good deal. Often these are using poor quality ingredients and in some cases because they're not regulated, they won't actually have what the label lists to help avoid such risks. Danahy suggests starting by speaking with your health care provider or registered dietitian who is well versed in supplements, then when you're ready to buy, be sure to do some research, especially on the brand, Danahy noted a question that I get asked fairly frequently is is this brand that I'm taking a good brand? Consumers may want to consult the NIH Office of dietary supplements as well as subscription based sources such as consumer lab, which charges a fee for access to its test results, which looks issues ranging from possible contaminants to making sure a supplement contains what it claims to. Vitamin B 12 can be found in multivitamins B complex supplements and by itself in A B 12 supplement. But research has not shown that any form of supplemental vitamin B 12 is better than others. According to the NIH, the federal agency also notes that some common doses much higher than recommended amounts such as 500 mcg or 1000 mcg. But because your body absorbs only a small percentage, those doses are considered safe according to the NIH. Vitamin B 12 can be prescribed as an injection, particularly for those who have absorption issues or have undergone gastric surgery since the shots bypass the digestive system. According to medical news today, prescription nasal sprays and IV infusions are also available though opinions on safety and effectiveness of the IV delivery are mixed. But finally, Dana, he stressed that however, you have to supplement yourself. The only reason it would improve energy would be if you're correcting a deficiency.

There are two mega trends that are going to define medicine in the next five years and then going onwards. One is that a is capabilities, keep on improving literally month to month. The large language models that I used a year ago are nowhere near as good as the ones that I I'm using today. At the same time, primary care is falling apart. I cannot find primary care doctors to refer my friends or faculty to. And that provides an opportunity on a patient centered focus where a lot of the missing functions that the primary care doctors used to provide, we can provide and augment maybe with nurse practitioners, maybe with physician assistants or maybe just with the social network of patients in a consumer focused way. A I has been around a long time. It has become the buzz because I think the end user is now seeing a lot more of it directly. But there's so much opportunity for A I and technology, machine learning in general in health care. And I think about it, especially in three particular areas. I think about the ways in which we can take cost out of the system. There's still a lot of phone calls and faxes and humans involved in work that doesn't really add that much value that machines can do and should do. Because then we can invest that savings in the experience that actually helps patients get healthier, you know, making more providers available. Improving that experience. The second area is the provider experience. So providers often have to go through pages and pages, not just dozens, sometimes hundreds of pages of history to try to find insights so they can focus with the patient on the topics that are going to matter. Most A I can help extract a lot of insights from that history. Um A I can also help a provider take notes without having to spend their time facing the computer so they can be facing the patient and spend the energy with the patient. And then of course, I think there is an opportunity for customers and patients to find out more about their choices so that they can be more informed in their own health and actually perhaps be navigated using technology uh without necessarily taking up the time of a provider to, to do that navigation for them. When GP T four came out, that was a two year sprint basically from GP T three, but it keeps on accelerating. A year later, many of the large language models started having visual and other multimodal capabilities. And so I took a picture that had never been seen by any doctor. It was just out of the journal medicine, a picture of the back of a man, an older man who had developed a lot of itchiness over the past day and felt really bad. And it was a photograph of his back and there were, these looked like scratch marks, lots of lines. I took everything from the puzzler, all the text and the picture I removed the most important clue and I gave it to GP four. I said, what is this and this with a clue. Most doctors didn't get it. And it said it could be something called Bleomycin toxicity reaction to a chemotherapy treatment. The other is shitake mushroom toxicity. I never heard of it. And what I removed from the history of the patient is that they're eating mushrooms the day before. And so we're having this phenomenal fast moving capability that is behaving with all the hall stations with all the problems better on average than most doctors in terms of depth of knowledge. How do we address the problem? I just asserted. Well, it turns out that right out of the box. When you train an A I on all the information you have on the internet, they'll say a lot of weird things, some of which are politically correct. So open A I and Google put a lot of effort into something called alignment. They give examples of questions and how they want it answered and you give that tens of thousands of such examples and it starts behaving in a certain way. It's aligned to certain behavior. So you can actually align A is to maximize certain outcomes. You could, then if you're making the A I, you could align it to the patient, you can align it to the hospital. No, we're talking about this, but it's actually a well known procedure how to align something called fine tuning and uh reinforcement learning with human feedback. These are all technical terms which basically say I'm taking this whole big machine and I'm telling you how I want it to behave. What are the concerns about A I? There are concerns around bias around um hallucinations. But in my opinion, the biggest concern is who is the A I serving? Is it maximizing the interest of the hospital, of the insurer of public health or the patient? And answering that question I think is perhaps the most important concern. And right now, we're not talking a lot about it.

How to Reverse Aging by Diluting Your Blood

Aging itself is a systematic inflammation that's chronically going on in your body. It's very hard to eliminate it. But this is a process that can directly inhibit it and also able to be reversing it. We have published a paper, a clinical study that has been showing people who have done 13 different plasma exchange. How exactly is it behaving in their body? Young blood is the way that people thought it's actually working. But what we have discovered is that exchanging the old plasma out, which is removing the old plasma itself, diluting the old plasma is actually having a better effect than just injecting young plasma. So we don't need to be vampire. The plasma dilution is that you take out your old plasma and through a centrifuge, it's going to be separate your blood into plasma, which is the yellow part and platelets, red blood cells, which is the red part, the yellow part is going to be thrown away and the red part is going to be going back to your body again with a young set of albumin. So this is called process of therapeutic plasma exchange, which is we are calling it as plasma dilution. And what is working for your body is it's actually going to be eliminating all of the factors that's inhibiting your cell regeneration and also causing the chronic inflammation that's in your body. Which also another name of chronic inflammation is h. So there is a lot of clinicians who are providing therapeutic plasma exchange or plasma dilution as it's already a FDA approved treatment process to solve immune system resistance organ exchange and also having toxicity in your body. So for example, Dr Kro in San Francisco, by partnering up with Irina Conboy lab, we have been discovered and doing clinical trials to show old plasma dilution has been working very good. This technology has been involved past 20 years already showing a lot of different clinical trials and clinical validation knowing how exactly these people after getting plasma diluted is able to be reversing their biological age and reducing their inflammatory levels in their body in systematic way. So we are seeing a huge comparison between before and after even doing one single plasma dilution. And this is going to be a very exciting technology that we are seeing how the people know if it if this is a great thing for them to work is that we usually recommend people to do the testing first to actually see what is your biological age in your different function in your different organ. So it's, it's exciting and we started actually with a focus on helping athletes win Olympic medals at the London Olympic Games. This was when Lance Armstrong and these guys were banned for drugs and the focus went on to the women's team, which was very underfunded and we had to quickly find a way to empower them to win medals without taking drugs. So that became the uh gold A I project. And we used a lot of sensors, data, everything from sleep, the blood glucose and then look for patterns in that and ways to intervene and improve their performance. So the app has a philosophy of always being free. So it's a free download. We want to help as many people as possible to optimize their day. There's a lot of old mythology and a lot of confusion around optimal uh planning of your day for, for the best fitness results, everything from high school athletes to collegiate, to just people wanting to lose weight, right? So with the technology that we are having right now, for our entire humanity, we believe that human can live up to 100 and 20 years old, to 100 and 50 years old or who are bored by this moment with IP S CS plasma exchange peptide gene therapy. So we are believing with the extension of the health, we will be able to solve disease one by one. But at the same time, really able to be extending the health plan. So people can live longer. But also at the same time, healthier. People always ask, what is the best way to extending their health and live healthier better? Well, it really comes down to the four real pillar of your life. Eat well, sleep for at least eight hours. Behave well, do exercise at least three times per week and also behave mentally. So take care of your brain and be mentally positive that's solving 80% of the problem. And we can go to extreme like doing stem cells, doing plasma dilutions, doing anything that's with the technology that can extend even more. One thing that almost all people can do today to promote their lifespan 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic activity a day. There are really strong data to show that even very small levels of very moderate activity significantly impact health outcomes. I think we're really focused culturally and a lot of the efforts that I see on the longevity piece and on trying to be young forever instead of really maximizing an optimal life at every age. And acknowledging that there are limitations at every age too. And hopefully we can change some of those. So I think in longevity is really, there's a spectrum of interventions that you could follow. And we're very much at the clinical uh medical end of that spectrum. So we help our patients really who come in and get scanned every year or two, just understand how the way they're living their life is impacting the underlying physiology of their body. And by providing them with that information, we are able to empower them to intervene early. And that intervention may be sometimes to obtain medical treatment early. Other times, it might be just to make an adjustment to lifestyle and those two things together that can really make a huge impact on the trajectory of one's health. I think one little known fact about longevity is that women who enter menopause later tend to live longer. And the converse is also true. And one thing that's cool is this has actually been demonstrated experimentally in a way where if you take an ovary out of a young mouse and transplant that into an older mouse, you can actually see lifespan extension in that older animal by to 11% with the effect size proportionate to the relative use of the ovary transplant. So this really underscores that ovaries and ovarian function are, are really inherently linked with longevity of the host of that ovary. And I think this really can drive home for women. You know, we think of ovaries as being essential for fertility and they're, they are, but they're important beyond that. I mean, their, their function is essential for cardiovascular health, for immune function, for sexual health or sleep, uh for brain function, for cognitive health uh mood. I think, you know, one thing that I think is important to say as it relates to health and longevity is, is is women really recognizing that and doing what they can to support their ovarian health. What I'm very excited about is there's so much more data than there was a decade or two ago. We now are able to do routine blood tests every few months. We can measure the uh age of ourselves using epigenetic techniques at provo, we're starting to really understand through having imaged so many people, what a normal organ, be it the brain or the liver looks like for someone of a certain age and then we can start to look at each individual and say, well, how are you tracking which organs are, are you doing well for your age and which organs do perhaps you need to focus on? So this data I believe is so valuable to individuals who otherwise are sort of just moving through life, not really knowing or having a lot of feedback about what's going on under the skin and through this data, hopefully we'll live a more positive uh and healthy life. As a result, I am excited about some of the technology that's giving more power to the user, like the wearables that we have the diagnostic technology that's coming out so that we can better understand our own health at a more granular level. And I think there's a very important place for doctors, but I think that especially in the community of folks, you know, that are in this kind of room and, and the communities that we run in there is a greater advocacy at the individual level for what a person can and will do for their own health. And I think ultimately, it is up to the individual to have a good healthy lifestyle. I mean, I think being able to have, you know, some of the stuff like the Apple watches and some of the very cool, I think VR based technology that's coming for mental health and, and some of the things coming down the line for, you know, being able to do ultrasounds, whether it's for treatments focused ultrasound or being able to replace like mammograms for breast exams. To understand if women have breast cancer, using some of the technology that's being developed for a more noninvasive methodology for that, I think is really cool to allow us to have a more preventative lens and understand our health ballistically and be able to intervene ideally with cheap and effective lifestyle transitions that can prevent the onset of diseases. Right now, we have already arrived into health care 3.0 which is we are focusing on prevention rather than being very reactive after solving the problem when we have the disease in our own body. So healthcare 2.0 is sicker. You only go to doctors when you are having disease. The healthcare 3.0 which is right now is health care. That means we are caring about our health and who is having the most information should be yourself? Because you are the one who is understanding what is the lifestyle, how are you behaving? What medicine will cause side effect to you? What is the dosage effect? How many caffeine will make you starting to shake all of these? Your doctor doesn't know because all of these is more focusing on health rather than disease or sick. Why we are encouraging people to do diagnostic test is because this is the launch pad for you to actually start your own health journey to have the power back to you and responsibility and rights being healthy, back to you to able to start the journey of the health.

Eat like an Olympic athlete: Try this cauli-fredo pasta with cashew cream

Hello, I am chef Jeff. I am an Olympic chef heading to the Paris 2024 Olympics. I am going to give you a sneak peek at the dishes served in the athletes village at this year's Olympics in Paris. Today. I'm going to prepare for you. An amazing plant based pasta made with Cal Alfredo with cashew cream to prepare today's meal. We have tricolored cauliflower that has been roasted with a little olive oil and sea salt. We have the cashews that we made the cashew cream with. We have a vegan plant-based Parmesan cheese. We have oven roasted tomato chili threads to add a little spice of flavor. A bucatini pasta, which is one of my favorites, diced shallots and sliced garlic. As you can see, a lot of this has been prep prepared to make meal planning quicker and easier. Gonna start by using a high flame to that. We are gonna add olive oil, good mouth. Then to that we have our predic shallot slivered garlic. I really love this dish. It's very aromatic. OK? Let the flame come up. We'll let this cook for a few minutes. This dish has great carbohydrate. It's something that adds a lot of calories for the athlete and it's a great way to prepare for their event. So we will let this get some color to it. Ok. Then we're gonna get one of my favorite pastas bucatini. So we're gonna add a portion of Bucatini. Ok, while that's cooking. Ok. We're getting some good color. Now we've precooked the pasta for and then here is our cashew cream that we have pres soaked the cashews overnight and then you blend them in a blender until smooth. Mhm. So we have the cashew cream. Ok. You can hear that cooking well. Ok. Well, he pissed off. Nice and hot. Turn the flame off. You can see how beautiful and creamy that is. Ok. Then to that, we are gonna de some vegan parmesan to the dish. Is that nice portion of that? And then to that we have these vine ripe tomatoes that we've done. We've cooked slowly in the oven. Nice, slow cooked simmer, it sweetens the tomato. And then we are gonna add our cauliflower. This normally you would do roasted at home and serve warm or you can saute it in the pasta for today. We chose to do it separately. See the beautiful color on these, these again were roasted with a little olive oil, salt and pepper, add some beautiful color and then to that, we'll finish it with a little chili bread or give it a pop of flavor and add a little color and there you are. I personally love this dish just for the flavor. You don't miss that. It doesn't have cream or butter. This is an amazing dish that tastes just like the original. Now, the best part of preparing this meal is to actually get to try it. Incredible. Enjoy.

So much of your environment and where you live impacts your health has an impact on your family's health. It can influence how long you live. It's not just about, you know, the proximity to the hospital, it's about living in a place where people take care of each other. Fortune analyzed over 1900 cities to come up with our list of best places to live for families. This is the third year that we're doing this list. Fortune partnered with a number of different data partners to look at five major categories from financial health to lability to aging resources, education and family health care. And so we looked at nearly 200 different metrics looking at things like the social determinants of health. Close. Does someone live to a grocery store? What's the walk ability index like? What's the social isolation risk for older adults? You looked at housing prices, crime rates, diversity statistics. We are keeping in mind that our target audience is the sandwich generation. So the people who are raising kids, but they are also caring for aging parents or thinking about getting ready to care for aging parents. This cohort of people is growing in the US because we are living longer simultaneously. We are having kids later life. The number of people, 65 and older is said to nearly double in the next 40 years. And so a lot of times people find themselves in that mixture of needing both resources for their aging parents when it comes to independent living homes or just resources for older adults to thrive independently as well as really great schools for maybe their younger Children. So we are looking at communities that are really investing in the resources that serve both the youngest and the oldest people who live there. A lot of edge cities and suburbs where was to the top of the list. It's not necessarily the biggest city in the state, but it tends to be a city that might have really easy access to that urban center. We also tend to have a fair amount of university hounds on our list that really makes sense to us because the university will provide not just the students of that university, but the wider city, ample resources when it comes to community events, health care hospitals even so we have Ann Arbor Michigan in our top 10 this year as well. That's home to the University of Michigan. Silver Spring is our number one city on the list. Silver Spring is located just six miles outside of Washington DC, which is ideal if you commute there for work and also the housing prices have come down just a little bit this year. Not only does it have the highest well being index score of any city on our list, but it's also one of the most diverse cities on our list. The probability that two people in the city will be of different races is 73%. What makes Silver Spring Maryland stand out is that they are investing in the evolving needs of their residents over time trying to support older adults beyond just the four walls of a hospital. So for example, they have outings for older adults that join the village, they can go to a theater, they can go to guest speakers, they can all go to a museum together, they can have volunteers that help them take notes at their doctor's appointments. Help with transportation. Research has shown that the most defining factor of our happiness by the end of our lives is the strength of our relationships and there's no more important factor of where to find those relationships than where you live in the communities and where you live. And so that's why we have this list at fortune because the best place to live for families, you know, it's not just in the now it's going to affect you in decades to come.

How the Olympics becomes the 'world's largest restaurant'

Supplying thousands of tons of food for the duration of the Olympics, Paris 2024 is set to become the 'world's largest restaurant' for the summer—and they're prioritizing plant-based meals.

At the Paris Olympics. We're expected to make thousands of tons of food. We'll be ordering over 3 million bananas, 20 tons of coffee and over 500 unique meals created by our team serving approximately 40,000 meals every day for over 15,000 athletes. I'm chef Jeff, one of the Olympic chefs with Sexo Live for Paris 2024. I am one of 25 global Sexo live chefs supporting a team of 1000 employees. Something people don't know is for the duration of the Olympics. This will be the world's largest restaurant with over 3500 seats served over 13 million meals for two months. The meals are inspired by international flavors. The main food hall at the athletes village will have an international section, a North American section, a halal section, an Asian section and of course a French section with all the classic French gastronomy and pastries. When looking at the meals served at the athletes village, we take into account nationality, religion, preferences and most of all the needs of the athlete's event. With my experience of feeding athletes. We're also going to be working with players, nutritionists and creating different recipes and menu items. Most recently in the food trends, we're starting to see athletes are looking for high carb meals, lean proteins and most of all diverse menus to give them options. One very exciting part at this year's Olympics. As 30% of the meals offered in athletes village will be plant based, looking at plant based meals. We'll have grains, nuts, seeds, tofu, soy based products are all high in protein. Some of the meals that we'll be preparing for the Paris. 2024 Olympics are a watermelon and pearl mozzarella salad with summer citrus. We're also gonna be preparing numerous grain bowls. One is a Faro grain bowl with roasted summer squash flat based bucatini pasta with a cashew cream and we'll be preparing seared scallops with asparagus and pure of parsnips and roast beets plant based food is not only great tasting and flavorful, it's also great for the environment. Our goal is to make this the greenest Olympics. There's been and we look to reduce the carbon footprint two fold from the 2012 London Olympics of the items sourced for this year's Olympics. 80% will be sourced within French borders. 25% will be sourced within 250 kilometers of the venue. There are so much that goes in to deliver such an amazing event. I will be heading to the Olympics early to help prepare, get set up and to make sure we are ready for when the athletes arrive. Our colleagues in France have been working very meticulously over the last two years to come up with a great plan, great menus, recipe creation, searching France for the best high quality ingredients with all the preparation. The one thing that I'm still just amazed by the teams behind the team. When you're at these large events, the environment is crazy. It's controlled chaos. It's long days, it's a very high paced tense environment. But with a great plan, everything comes together, you end up with just a great event. It's an incredible honor to be selected as an Olympic chef. Needless to say I'm prepared for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Meditation vs. mindfulness—and how to get started

Hi, I'm Eve and I'm a meditation teacher and the director of teaching at headspace. You may have heard these two words, meditation and mindfulness used interchangeably before. But there is a difference. Mindfulness is a quality of mind and it refers to paying attention on purpose with a soft and open attitude. So often in life, we're distracted, caught up in the busyness and stress of life. And this creates a lot of tension in the mind and body. And we miss so much of what life has to offer. When we pay attention. In this way, we start to understand our feelings and our emotions in more detail. So now meditation, meditation is the practice and this is where we take some intentional time out of our busy day. Could be three minutes, five minutes, 10 minutes to practice and cultivate mindfulness. And by training the mind to be more present, open and at ease, we tend to experience greater calm clarity, 10 and compassion in our lives. Just a few tips to help you get settled and set up. So first, and this is probably the most important piece you're not trying to switch off the mind or clear the mind of thoughts. In fact, you're learning to observe thoughts, observe the mind without judgment. Sometimes your focus will wander. In fact, it will wander a lot or you will forget to follow your breath. That's ok. It's part of the experience. It's actually in noticing the mind wandering and bringing it back that builds that mental strength and resilience. Second, learning to meditate is like learning any other skill, think of it like exercising a that you're working at like any other muscle, that's a part of your body. It takes consistent practice to get comfortable. And with meditation, it's usually easier if you have a teacher to guide you. And lastly, it can take some time to get comfortable sitting with the mind. There might be obstacles or setbacks along the way, but that's all part of the practice. It's a part of life. We're learning to be comfortable sitting with uncertainty, sitting with a busy mind and starting small is totally ok. It's actually much better to be consistent at the beginning to build the habit. And really you're doing great just showing up.

Oura CEO: 'Health should be a daily practice'

Health should be a daily practice for everyone. And that's partially because it's important for you to make preventative changes in your life to increase your health span. I tend to wake up pretty early. Um Usually sometime between four and five and in the morning, uh my health routine is pretty simple. Uh I take some supplements and then my routine is to have a kind of a quiet, calm moment between five and six before jumping in the shower. And when I jump in the shower, I make sure I do 10 breathing exercises as I'm finishing up my shower and getting ready for the day. I tend to avoid caffeine, which I think is befitting of a sleep CEO but I also will on occasion, maybe take a small hit of an espresso or sometimes if I'm feeling naughty. A latte exercise is such a critical part of your health and wellness, but it's also really important for your mental health. Uh You can get inside of your body, you can do a workout kind of, you know, transport yourself away from the daily cares of the world. I started rowing during COVID, I was looking for ways to exercise at home and I had a treadmill and I was running on the treadmill, but I was starting to run out of the appetite to continue on the treadmill. So I decided to mix it up and got a rower and it turned out to be a really great decision because being able to, uh, change your exercise routine actually is really important because you fall into a routine, you fall into a rut. So I like to say, you know, what's the best exercise you should do today? It's the one you didn't do yesterday. I try and row about half an hour almost as many days of the week. I can, I don't get all seven days, especially if I'm traveling. But I do have a rower and I will try and get that in every, every day I can for a short amount of time, you know, 15 to 20 minutes. You can actually get quite a lot of workouts, a full body workout and then I'll do some weights and, and I think this is important maybe for everyone to know that you should be trying to balance cardio and strength training. And, and so I try and, you know, strike a nice balance. Um, in each session, I'll do a little bit of cardio and a little bit of weights. Um and resistance training is, is really great. It's great for your longevity. It's great for your energy and it's great for your metabolism. But it's also really just a great thing to do to build strength and feel comfortable in your body.

Try this one-minute guided meditation you can do anywhere

Today, I wanted to share a really short one minute meditation with you. So let's get started. I'm sitting in a chair, but you can sit on the couch, you can lie down for this, whatever is going to be most comfortable for you. So take a moment to get comfortable, you can close your eyes or rest your gaze downward, softening the jaw, relaxing the shoulders as best you can. I didn't go with any tension in the body, maybe feeling the feet on the floor. Let's take a slower deeper breath breathing in through the nose and out through the mail. And for the next few moments focusing the attention on your breathing. So noticing where in the body you feel that movement, not breathing in any special way, just following each in breath and each out bra when the mind wanders, which it will just gently returning the attention to the breath. It's ok if you have to bring the mind back every second, it's actually in noticing and bringing the mind back that we build that mental strength. So I didn't go with any focus on the bride, perhaps feeling your feet on the floor. Noticing sounds around you and in your own time you had your eyes closed, generally opening them. So thank you for pausing and practicing with me today. Sometimes all it takes is just a minute or two. And I really hope you learned something new and that you'll come back again to try it.

Hello, I am chef Jeff. I am an Olympic chef heading to the Paris 2024 Olympics. I am going to give you a sneak peek at the dishes served in the Athletes Village at this year's Olympics in Paris. Today, I'm going to prepare for you a faro salad with roast summer squash. We start the dish, we have king oyster mushroom and micro squash, grape seed oil, roasted chickpeas. We have roasted summer squash and cremini mushroom, toasted walnuts, pomegranate seed and our cooked farrow. The great part of this dish is it can be a plant based dish. 30% of the food at the Paris Olympics in the athletes village will be plant based added. Today, we have the Lena, which adds an element of protein and calcium. Today, we're going to start with a little cooked fo it's an ancient grain. It's easy to cook. It has a great nutty flavor and we're gonna add our roast summer squash and cami mushroom. These have been oven roasted on a just wonderful, ok. We'll give this a toss, add a little bit of our grape seed oil. The vegetables have a really wonderful aromatic quality to them. Add a little salt. It's ok. This dish is great for pre workout. Carbs are great in the dish and it helps athletes boost energy. Then we are gonna add a little bit of our roasted chickpeas and then we are gonna add our Lena and then to that, we're gonna add our pomegranate seeds and finish it with toasted walnuts and king oyster mushroom. And there you have it. One of the great reasons why I love this dish is how clean it eats, especially for an athlete as they're preparing for their event. Now, the best part we get to try it with the Lena and pomegranate seed just so refreshing. Amazing.

5 tips to integrate mindfulness into your life

Whether it be for decreasing work, stress and anxiety, improving sleep, and even calming nerves around public speaking. I will often recommend mindfulness training such as meditation when trying to tackle various life challenges. In this case, all you really need is 1 to 5 minutes a day, any time of day and a space where you can focus for that length of time. Nothing fancy a chair, a car, a walk outside, either of those work perfectly. Here are five tips that can be helpful in integrating a mindfulness practice into your day to day life. First. If you're getting started with meditating, it's helpful to add it to an existing routine like having a cup of coffee or tea in the morning or even after breakfast. Second, you may find it helpful to schedule a reoccurring meeting in your calendar every day for a few minutes. Just to meditate. You can also try working in a midday meditation or mindfulness session to help give your mind a break. After a few hours of working and thinking in our increasingly overstimulated lives. Our brains have more information to process than ever before and with so much going on finding and keeping our focus can be challenging in a busy tech connected world. But if we can be calm and clear headed, it's easier to find that sweet spot. A relaxed focus that keeps us learning and retaining new information. When people take routine breaks, it can actually make them more productive and focused for the next tip meditating before a big meeting or exam can help with calming jitters and keep you focused. When the stakes are high, the emotions usually match and with the emotions swirling, it's not easy to sit down and focus. And finally, for the fifth tip at the end of the day, it can be helpful to wind down with the meditation to help transition ourselves out of our work mindset. Unlike our electronics, humans aren't hardwired to power off with the push of a button. We're not meant to stay amped up all day and then drop into sleep in an instant, try slowing down with a short sleep meditation to relax the body and the mind. I hope this was helpful and encouraging to start your own mindfulness and meditation practice.

Hello, I am chef Jeff. I am an Olympic chef heading to the Paris 2024 Olympics. I am going to give you a sneak peek at the dishes served in the athletes village at this year's Olympics in Paris. Today, we're going to make a summer citrus salad with watermelon and pearl mozzarella. We're going to show you the ingredients that we have. We have ruby grapefruit. It's pre sliced, we have blood orange that we pre sliced as well. Purple basil, opal basil sumac florida, roasted pistachios, pearl mozzarella. We have a little citrus vinaigrette crest lemon zest and we have watermelon. The benefit to this dish is everything you prepare ahead of time. It makes it very easy to prepare. Once you're ready to eat. We're gonna start this dish with our ruby grapefruit place down. This dish is great for athletes post workout and we're gonna take a few mozzarella and watermelon and then this dish we're gonna layer the ingredients and build it out. We have our pearl mozzarella and then we are gonna add a little blood orange, love the color on the orange. We're going to take a little sumac Sprinkle that around. This gives us some really good tart flavor. I finish with a little Fleur de C toasted pistachio. And then this is Press Love this herb. It's got some good flavor call and then we'll take some basil. One of the great benefits of this salad is with the citrus. It adds that vitamin C and antioxidant quality, which is great for athlete recovery. And then the other added benefit is with the pearl mozzarella. We have higher protein which helps athletes prepare for their next event. A little extra pearl mozzarella. And then we finish this salad with a little additional lemon zest, little opal basil, regular basil, some toasted pistachios, little sumac. And then we will take our citrus vinaigrette, top it with that and then finish with a tiny bit of grape seed oil and that's it. It's a lovely dish good for recovery for athletes. So let's give it a try. Fabulous.

3 ways to practice mindfulness at work

For many people, the work day is spent dealing with constant deadlines, distractions and other stressors all competing for attention. At the exact same time. Research shows that work stress in particular can have a dominating effect on people's lives, impeding their ability to fully show up to work, maintain healthy relationships and properly care for their minds and bodies. If we that chronic stress unaddressed, it can lead to lost productivity, employee burnout attrition and substantial excess health care cost through mindfulness training, we can condition our brains to respond to stress in a way that protects our health, our well being and performance. Here are three simple ways to practice mindfulness at work. First, take regular breaks. Most people don't think they can afford the time to take a break, let alone regular breaks. But a well known productivity study found among a group of employees, the 10% who were the most productive had an ideal work rhythm of 52 minutes of work followed by a 17 minute break. If you want to start incorporating breaks into your day, try setting a timer on your phone to ring every hour when the timer rings. Take a break. It could be as short as one minute at your desk or as long as you can spare, no matter how you spend them, regular breaks can be particularly effective and rejuvenating. Number two, actively listen, try being fully present and mindful of what others are saying throughout the work day. Instead of just automatically nodding. As you wait for your turn to talk, you'll benefit from learning to quiet the internal chatter in your head and creating a space and openness to process what your coworkers are trying to tell you lastly use your commute to mindfully unwind. It's important to unplug at the end of a work day and set boundaries. So you can be truly present at home. The commute can be an ideal time to make this transition. I think many of us can relate to the fact that in this hyper connected world, we're experiencing increasing levels of stress, whether at work in our personal lives or social media, why stress itself is not innately bad? If left unattended, it can develop into overwhelming or chronic stress which radically increases a risk of debilitating mental and physical ailments by setting people up for success and helping them achieve their goals around health and happiness. We can take a step in the right direction to inspire cultural change that has a ripple effect, not just throughout the company but across everyone employees interact with on a daily basis.

Sleep is critical. Imagine if I was able to give you a drug that would improve your mood, increase your energy, make your immune system stronger, reduce your appetite. Have you live longer? Reduce the chances of you getting type two diabetes or heart disease or maybe even Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. Would you take that drug? Of course you would, anyone would. Uh And the thing is is that that drug is for free. It's called sleep. And all you need to do is to know how to do it and to practice it intentionally tips for a good night's sleep. One of the classic uh sleep hygiene tips is to sleep in a cooler bedroom. So you might try that out and see if that improves your sleep. If you have a wearable that tracks sleep, you'll have a objective measure to know whether or not the change that you made. The experiment that you ran will affect the outcome of your sleep. Another tactic this is very common obviously is to use white noise. Some people prefer a fan. Some people like a white noise generator or a pink noise generator or a brown noise. There's all these different kinds of noise. You choose what that is that really works for you and you stick with it. Another tactic that people often use for sleep is sleep supplements. Uh Melatonin, it's the chemical that your body releases in order to kind of start everybody off on the process of going into this glorious symphony of sleep. I personally, I like to take LCN nine and magnesium. I take a kind of a sleep cocktail of three or four pills every night and their supplements, they're just compounds that are both relaxing and restful but also are very conducive to staying asleep. So magnesium is, I think a tried and true tactic for many people definitely works for me. Keep your room quiet and dark. It's not always possible. So, you know, sometimes you can isolate your own uh hearing with earplugs or with an eye mask to keep it dark if you can't keep the room itself dark. And then the last one and this is somewhat, I think counterintuitive for people sleep regularity increasingly is demonstrating that it is an important part of quality sleep. Think about the routine you had as maybe as a baby where your sleep and wake cycles were incredibly, you know, regimented and your body knew how to behave around those. And of course, you have your own sleep cycle, it's called your circadian cycle. But if you are regular and you're hitting that sort of window of falling asleep at the right time every night and waking up at the same time, you're actually going to do a great job of convincing your body your body how to sleep more effectively.

And I still remember my first half marathon. I'm like, holy cow. Everyone showed up at five in the morning and it was New York City at its best. And I ran my first half did better than I had expected and have since then have run three marathons and too many halves to count. I love running. I discovered running at 45 years old and maybe it's because I like having a goal or I like having a challenge. I could not run a mile when I first started, started running. What I love about running is, first of all, it's an amazing community. Number two, you're competing with yourself. It's about you setting a goal, whether it's a time goal, whether it's finishing a race, whether it's seeing a new city. So it's all about you and you're sharing with so many others. And what I love about running is it's all ages, all body types. It's young, old coming together for one thing of, of running and to me, wellness is very important. So running to me has been something that I'm not a particularly good runner, but it's something that I feel better after I after I've been on a run, it sounds corny. But I was one of the proudest moments for me when a New York road runners board member, I asked to join their board because I learned how to run at 45. And there are a lot of elite runners on the board, but they thought I was a poster child for running and how great running could be for health, for wellness and just the camaraderie DC is my new hometown. I have been at Fannie Mae for a year, so I have not run a race in the last year. But thanks to the Fannie Mae employees, they told me about the 10 mile Cherry Blossom race in April coming up in DC and I am training for a 10 miler. Come this April.

You can make specific changes that actually help change the trajectory of how you age telehealth is a consumer focused Longevity company whose mission is to help people live healthier for longer by providing solutions including an epigenetic age test, personalized action plans and pro longevity supplements. A lot of people ask me for tips to help lower their epigenetic age or really their body's true age. You know, I think the biggest thing that people can do is get up and move, go take a walk, ask a friend to do a walk with you around the block, take a meeting on the phone and walk around the neighborhood. Movement is significant for aging and definitely can help improve your health span. So when I think about my aging and my wellness routine, I really focus on a couple of things that have the most impact for me which are stress and sleep. So when I wake up in the morning, I do a quick meditation, breath work and yoga, I listen to, I'm calming music and then I start with my day. I also try to get a few breaks throughout the day between meetings to either meditate, listen to music or take a walk. So my job keeps me pretty busy during the week with Zoom calls back to back. But on the weekend, I'm super intentional about getting outside. I'll take my kids to the park, we'll walk as long as the weather will allow us to. And that makes me more content and feels like I'm making great move for my health. One of the things that we've seen in our data at tally is that one of the biggest drivers of healthy aging is actually your relationships, having a really strong bond with your friends, your family, your community, whatever outlet you have to build those bonds with other people and have that interpersonal interaction is actually extremely significant. I've really tried to lean in to my women's group, my family calling old friends and just catching up for a few minutes every day. And I've found that that has led to a lot of positivity and brightness in my day that helps me reduce stress. That helps me feel really great. And all of that actually ties back to healthy aging. I want to live healthier and I want to live longer so that I can spend more time with my kids, with my husband, with our friends and family members. Those are the moments that bake what life is so to be able to live healthier without disease or condition, without ailments and without losing mental capacity. That's why I focus on my health.
