One company said 12 hours. One company said right away. Probably the most we heard was 48 hours, but the vast majority wanted email response within 24 hours. Research the culture of the company. Wearing a tailored suit to a tech startup might be as bad as wearing a hoodie to a law firm. You just have to know what to expect and kind of dress accordingly. Don't say bad things about your last employer. This is something it seems like people see again and again. When somebody is saying bad things about the company they just worked for, there's nothing stopping that employee from then going on to say terrible things about them. One thing these recruiters did not want to see is potential candidates talking about compensation and benefits too early in the process. They wanted to hear about how passionate the candidate was, and they wanted the candidate to maybe kind of understand that details about salary and benefits might be hashed out further along in the interview process. One thing we heard again and again from recruiters at these companies is that candidates should be nice to everyone. At Baird, which famously has a no assholes policy, they ask the receptionist what they thought of the candidate. And if the candidate was mean to the receptionist, that person is not hired.
